\nAs Barry, Huck and Jack have hinted, we (NIH and
\nNaval Medical) are in a very interesting
\nsituation here, since we are in some ways almost
\nuniquely positioned to appeal to cyclists (our
\ndemographics include many young, healthy
\nprofessionals, some of
\n us must meet ongoing
\nhealth and fitness requirements, and we also
\nemploy foreign visitors from countries where
\ncycling is the preferred method of cheap,
\nhealthy, efficient transportation). Oh yeah, and
\nsome of us are the very researchers whose work
\nhas shown the effectiveness of daily physical
\nactivities (like riding a bike) at staving off an
\nearly death.<\/p>\n
Literally thousands of cyclists daily utilize the
\nmajor intersections that serve NIH and Naval
\nMedical, the same intersections that are up for
\nBRAC specific re-design. Yet the first proposed
\ndesigns show absolutely ZERO accommodations for
\ncyclists. Keep in mind, these are intersections
\non roads that are masterplanned for multiple
\nimportant bicycle amenities from shared-use paths
\nto bike lanes.<\/p>\n
Even if you don’t choose to join our NIH\/NAVAL
\nBRAC list-serve, stay tuned for continued info
\nfrom LAB, WABA, MoBike and
\n others. Cyclists
\neverywhere should be OUTRAGED that employees at
\nthe National Institutes of Health and Bethesda
\nNaval Medical Center not to mention local
\ncitizens who also should have a choice of whether
\nto drive or bicycle are so far being ignored,
\nsqueezed off the roads and bull-dozed. There will
\ncertainly be requests for letters to support the
\nneed for safe and adequate cycling accommodations
\nin intersections that are already among the most
\ncongested with the lowest possible level of
\nservice in the state of Maryland!
