{"id":132482261,"date":"2009-03-14T08:37:41","date_gmt":"2009-03-14T08:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=132482261"},"modified":"2009-03-14T08:37:41","modified_gmt":"2009-03-14T08:37:41","slug":"londons-cycling-design-standards-a-model-for-nyc-or-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=132482261","title":{"rendered":"London\u2019s Cycling Design Standards: A Model for NYC or here?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As New York City begins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2006\/11\/13\/birth-of-a-class-iii-bike-route\/\">fulfilling its commitment<\/a> to build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2006\/09\/12\/city-announces-bike-safety-improvements\/\">200 miles of new bicycle lanes<\/a> over the next three years, the question will increasingly arise: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2006\/11\/06\/cyclists-and-pedestrians-fighting-over-the-scraps\/\">What kind of bike lane&nbsp;should go where?<\/a> Currently,&nbsp;DOT seems not to have&nbsp;any set of guidelines&nbsp;to answer that question. So, take a look at how the&nbsp;City of London&nbsp;does it. <\/p>\n<p>Transportation Alternatives&#8217;&nbsp;bike program director Noah Budnick pointed me to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tfl.gov.uk\/businessandpartners\/publications\/2766.aspx\"><em>London Cycling Design Standards<\/em><\/a> book. It is a remarkable document and, perhaps,&nbsp;a great model for New York City to follow.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The chart below can be found in Chapter 4, page 62. With vehicle volume on one axis and speed on the other, it establishes a general set of rules&nbsp;for when a street&nbsp;should have&nbsp;a&nbsp;physically-separated, &#8220;segregated&#8221;&nbsp;bike lane&nbsp;versus when&nbsp;bikes should mix with &#8220;calmed&#8221; motor vehicle traffic.
