{"id":130341328,"date":"2009-02-17T13:55:28","date_gmt":"2009-02-17T13:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=130341328"},"modified":"2009-02-17T13:55:28","modified_gmt":"2009-02-17T13:55:28","slug":"urban-discoveries-living-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=130341328","title":{"rendered":"Urban Discoveries Living Blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>[We got some press on another blog, check them out!]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You may have noticed, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/urbandiscoveriesblog.com\/2009\/01\/22\/is-the-red-line-flat-lining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previous<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/urbandiscoveriesblog.com\/2009\/01\/16\/give-the-wheels-a-rest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posts<\/a>, that we like public transportation.&nbsp; If we can make it without a car, we will.&nbsp; So we were delighted to see that bikers way out in Portland, Oregon were calling Baltimore the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bikeportland.org\/2009\/01\/27\/baltimores-bike-improvements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">next big bike city<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp; It gave us hope.&nbsp; And then we started to look around and realized that, hey, maybe those crazy Portland types have a point.&nbsp; In some ways, we\u2019re set up well as the biking city of the future.<\/p>\n<p>This new focus on biking in the city starts, surprisingly, at the top.&nbsp; Mayor Sheila Dixon is a big proponent of cycling in the city (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.examiner.com\/a-726950%7EDixon_leads_bike_to_work_effort.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she even wears a helmet at press conferences!<\/a>) and has implemented a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ci.baltimore.md.us\/government\/planning\/bikeplan.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bicycle Master Plan<\/a> and made bicycle use a major piece of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorecity.gov\/government\/planning\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baltimore Sustainability Plan<\/a>. Nate Evans, Baltimore\u2019s Bicycle and Pedestrian Planner, predicts that by 2010, two percent of city residents will bike to work.&nbsp; And all of this is backed up by the recent creation of 42 miles of bikeways throughout the city and 70 new bike racks (made from converted parking meters!) in downtown.<\/p>\n<p>We also have a slew of bike-loving activists, and some of them have blogs.
