This has resulted in sprawl, congestion, and a<br \/>\nbuilt environment that is largely inconvenient, inaccessible or<br \/>\nunsafe for active transportation such as walking and bicycling.<br \/>\nBecause of this, rates of walking and bicycling are generally<br \/>\nvery low, except in dense neighborhoods built on a grid pattern,<br \/>\nand in mixed-use areas where schools, businesses and public<br \/>\nfacilities are located within close proximity of residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>The most vulnerable populations, including children, the<br \/>\nelderly and those with special needs, have been functionally<br \/>\nshut out of the transportation and land use infrastructure, and<br \/>\nhave become dependant upon the automobile, or have simply<br \/>\nbecome less active because they cannot move around their<br \/>\ncommunities without a great deal of effort and personal risk.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saferoutespartnership.org\/media\/file\/SRTS_built_environment_12-08_lo-res.pdf\">https:\/\/www.saferoutespartnership.org\/media\/file\/SRTS_built_environment_12-08_lo-res.pdf<\/a><br \/>\noldId.20081214214412939<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the 1950\u2019s the United States has been planning and developing its communities and transportation infrastructure around suburban living and the speed and convenience of the automobile.
