It saddens me to say that I will be leaving
\nmy post as Executive Director of One Less Car
\nthis month. It’s been a great twenty-two
\nmonths and I’ve had a wonderful time working
\nwith all of you.<\/span><\/p>\n

One Less Car is a very small non-profit and I
\nwould be lying if I said its been easy
\njuggling a full schedule of events, advocacy
\nand administrative minutiae. But looking back
\nI see a lot for OLC members to be proud of –
\nBicycle racks on all MTA buses, the repeal of
\nthe state ban on bikes and peds on MdTA
\nbridges, the OLC BRAC report, the Fall ’08
\nBike Summit, the Baltimore transit summits
\nand, of course, CAM and Tour du Port.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n <\/span><\/p>\n

I know that OLC will continue on
\na path where advocacy will be a central
\nfocus. Marylanders need a strong advocate for
\nbike and pedestrian issues and OLC can
\ncertainly fill that role.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n <\/span><\/p>\n

Carol Silldorff, a former consultant for
\nBaltimore Green Week<\/span>, will be the Interim
\nExecutive Director of One Less Car starting
\nin Mid-December. I hope you will all join me
\nin wishing her the best of luck.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you all know, One Less Car has been very
\nlucky in having Richard work with us. His
\npassion for alternative transportation shows
\nby his literally walking the talk by busing
\nand biking around Baltimore since he came on
\nboard. His efforts in getting 100% of MTA
\nbuses fitted with bike racks was a real win
\nfor those who need to make a bike\/bus
\ntransition. And his efforts to strengthen the
\nvoices of bicyclists and transit riders has
\nbeen a genuine success. We wish him well!<\/p>\n

Some organizational updates – We want to
\nwelcome our newest board members: Tom Taylor,
\nJohn Purcell and Bruce Herman. They each
\nbring vital experience and interests that
\nwill surely help One Less Car in aggressively
\npursuing our dream of less cars on our roads.
\nTowards that end, our board will begin a
\nplanning process to not only look at viable
\nways to reduce car use, but to measure our
\nsuccess with goals and outcomes that will
\nhold all of us and our public officials fully
\naccountable in making our roads less crowded.

\nAdministration is proposing drastic cuts to
\nMARC rail and commuter bus service in the
\nBaltimore and Washington areas. Most dramatic
\nis the proposal to cut commuter bus service
\nfrom Columbia to Downtown Baltimore to the
\nvery bone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Below is a list of some of the reasons why
\nthe League
\nof American Bicyclists ranked Maryland a
\nlowly 35th in their annual ranking of
\nbike-friendly states. One Less Car
\nstrongly <\/i>encourages you to read over
\nthe list and demand that the Maryland
\nDepartment of Transportation address these
\nissues. We believe that this checklist should
\nserve as a workplan for MDOT staff as they
\nmove forward on improving bike accessibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

No 3ft or greater safe passing law
\nExistence of a discriminatory mandatory
\nbike lane law
\nNo Complete Streets or Bicycle and
\nPedestrian Accommodation policy (Note: the
\nstate has language encouraging bike\/ped
\naccommodations, but no plan for ensuring that
\nthese accommodations are actually built)
\nNo Mountain Biking Plan
\nNo CO2 Reduction Plan that includes
\nbicycle usage
\nNo policy requiring bike parking at state
\nowned facilities
\nNo system in place to determine
\npercentage of state highways that have paved
\nshoulders
\nNo dedicated state funding source for
\nbicycling projects or programs
\nNo questions regarding the
\nresponsibilities of motorists towards
\ncyclists on driver’s test<\/p>\n
